Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls Tours

An hour and a half southeast of Rovaniemi, the cliffs of Korouoma canyon turn into walls of blue and white ice every winter, some of it streaked amber. You reach them on foot, down a snowy trail into the gorge. Four guided day trips from Rovaniemi cover every kind of day, from a cheap hike with sausages on the fire to a photo tour for eight. Below, each price sits next to the group size and the gear you borrow, along with the small print.

  • Ice season: about December to AprilThe falls usually build up through December and are at their thickest from January to March
  • Small groups fill firstMost tours take eight people per van, so the weeks around Christmas and the February holidays go early

In a hurry? Our top pick is Arctic GM's hike with a campfire BBQ: ~$89 a person, with thermal overalls, a 4×4 van and grilled sausages in the canyon. Book it here.

Korouoma trips at a glance

  • Six to seven hours, door to doorAbout three of them in a van. The rest goes on the trail and the falls, with a stop at the fire
  • A real hike, about 5 kmDown into the gorge and back up again. Icy steps, ropes on the steep bits and spikes on your boots
  • Not in Rovaniemi itselfThe canyon lies about 105 km (65 miles) away in Posio, so every tour starts with a drive
  • Ice is likely, never promisedThe falls grow with the frost and shrink in a thaw. A mild spell in March can leave them wet and grey

If you only have a minute

Which Korouoma tour should you book?

If a friend asked us how to see the frozen falls from Rovaniemi, this is what we would tell them over a cup of coffee.

The Korouoma tour we would book first is Arctic GM's frozen waterfalls hike with a BBQ, from ~$89. It costs about half what the small-group rivals charge and still lends you thermal overalls. The guides grill sausages over a fire in the canyon, and it holds the best score here, 4.9 from 1,600+ reviews on GetYourGuide.

Want warm boots and a jacket handed to you, in a group of eight? Wild about Lapland's small-group tour costs ~$163. Want someone else to take the photos? Beyond Arctic's photo tour at ~$163 sends you edited pictures afterward. ToTheNorth's hike at ~$146 takes up to 16 and lends no clothing.

None of them can promise thick ice. Check what each trip really costs and when the falls are frozen, see how the day is spent, then read what the listings play down before you pay.

Our pick

The Korouoma day we would book: Arctic GM's hike and BBQ

The cheapest of the four, and the one with the most reviews. You see the same canyon and the same falls, with a hot lunch from the fire, for far less than the small-group rivals.

Rovaniemi: Korouoma Canyon Frozen Waterfalls Hike & BBQ, Arctic GM

★★★★★ 4.9 from 1,600+ reviews on GetYourGuide · free cancellation up to 24 hours before

Arctic GM is a Rovaniemi family company that says its roots in Lapland go back twenty generations. Its Korouoma day runs entirely in-house. Certified guides with first-aid training drive you the 105 km to the canyon in new Ford Tourneo 4×4 vans, which matters on snowy back roads.

At the car park you pull on thermal overalls and the guide leads a hike of 4 to 6 km into the gorge. Halfway, the group stops at a fire for hot drinks and grilled sausages. English is guaranteed, and other languages can be requested after booking, though they depend on which guides are free.

How the day runs, step by step

The guide picks the route and the falls on the day to suit the snow and ice. This is the outline the listing gives:

Out of Rovaniemi

  • Pickup at your accommodation, or meet at the Arctic GM office on Valtakatu
  • About 1.5 hours southeast by 4×4 van, roughly 105 km
  • Overalls on and spikes on your boots at the trailhead

In the canyon

  • A guided hike of 4–6 km down into the gorge to the frozen falls
  • Hot drinks and grilled sausages at a campfire, then the climb back up
  • Back in Rovaniemi about 7 hours after pickup

What the price covers

For the lowest fare of the four, the list is longer than you might expect. What it leaves out is mostly about comfort.

Included
  • Pickup and drop-off in Rovaniemi
  • Thermal overalls for the hike
  • Hot drinks and grilled sausages
  • A certified guide trained in first aid
Not included
  • Winter boots and gloves
  • A full lunch beyond the sausages
  • A small group, unless you pick that option
  • A guarantee of thick ice

Between us, before you go

A word from one cold-toed hiker to another. The listing sells two options on the same page: a small group of up to eight and a standard group of up to fifty. Check which one you are booking. The tour also needs at least two guests to run, and children under eight cannot come.

Reviewers love the guides, but some wish the barbecue were bigger and that more water came along. Pack a snack and a bottle. Our guide to dressing for the canyon covers the rest.

Why it beats the pricier tours

The canyon and the falls are the same whoever drives you there. Arctic GM charges a little over half what Wild about Lapland or Beyond Arctic ask. It still lends overalls and feeds you at the fire. With the small-group option you also get the same cap of eight. Small group or big van? weighs the options side by side.

Who we would not send on it

Anyone with back or heart trouble, or with children under eight, since the listing rules both out. Travelers who arrive without proper boots, who will be better off on Wild about Lapland's tour with boots lent. And couples who want pictures of themselves at the ice, who should look at Beyond Arctic's photo tour.

Book it if

You want the frozen falls and a fire in the snow for the lowest fare. You are reasonably fit and can manage a few icy climbs. It suits couples and friends who own warm boots, and families whose children are eight or older.

Skip it if

The day itself

How a Korouoma frozen waterfall tour works

All four trips follow the same shape: a van from Rovaniemi, a hike down to the ice and a fire in the snow. What differs is how many people share the van and what you are lent for the cold.

Style · eight to a van

A small group

Wild about Lapland, Beyond Arctic, Arctic GM (option)

6.5–7 hpickup, 1.5 hours to the canyon, about 4 hours there, back

Eight people fit round one fire and one viewpoint, and the guide can wait for the slowest walker. Two of the three lend boots and warm clothing. You pay for it: up to almost twice the price.

Style · a bigger group

Sixteen or more

ToTheNorth, Arctic GM (standard option)

6–7 hpickup, the drive, about 2 hours on the trail and a picnic

Cheaper and easier to book at short notice. The group strings out on the icy steps, so the pace suits the middle of the pack. Some reviewers wished the guide had regrouped more often.

Eight things about Korouoma that no listing puts in big letters

None of these sits at the top of a booking page, and each one decides whether you come home with blue ice on your camera or cold feet and a grey photo.

What you should know

  1. The hardest part is the way out. The trail drops into the canyon, so the day ends with a steep climb back to the car park. Reviewers call it the toughest stretch. The trail.
  2. The ice changes every winter. A cold winter builds tall blue columns; a mild one leaves wet streaks. A thaw in March can soften them within days.
  3. Spikes are not optional. All four tours lend grips or spikes for your boots. The descents are polished ice, and ropes guard the steepest parts.
  4. Check the group option. Arctic GM sells a group of eight and one of up to fifty on the same page, with different prices. Group sizes.
  5. Lunch is a campfire snack. Expect sausages in bread with hot drinks rather than a meal. Bring a snack and water of your own. The full costs.
  6. Downtown pickup is not a given. Wild about Lapland collects only from hotels outside the center. Arctic GM meets at its office unless you choose pickup.
  7. The cold is drier than you expect. Minus twenty in Lapland feels easier than a wet zero, until you stand still at the falls. Wool helps most. What to wear.
  8. Daylight is short in December. Around midwinter the sun barely clears the trees, and the canyon floor stays in shade. From February the light comes back. The best weeks.

★★★★★Hike and BBQ, Arctic GM

We were picked up at our cabin in a black 4×4 van, and by the time it got light we were pulling blue overalls on at the edge of the forest. The way down into the canyon is steeper than it looks on the photos, but the guide put spikes on everyone's boots and waited at every icy step. The first fall we reached was pale turquoise and taller than a church. Sausages over the fire, hot berry juice, then the climb out, which left me puffing. For this price I expected less.

Good to know

How the falls of Korouoma freeze, and what you are looking at

Five minutes of reading makes the colors in the ice and the shape of the canyon far easier to follow.

Korouoma is a long, deep cleft in the forests of Posio, south of the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland. The gorge is some 30 km (19 miles) long and as much as 130 m (430 ft) deep, with sheer rock walls on both sides and the Korojoki river along the bottom.

01Water that freezes on the way down

Streams and seeping groundwater spill over the canyon walls all year. When the frost sets in, each trickle freezes a little more every day, until whole cliff faces are hung with ice. The largest falls reach around 60 m. The falls one by one.

02Why some ice is blue and some brown

Dense, clear ice swallows red light and looks blue, while ice full of air bubbles looks white. Some falls carry an amber or rusty tint, which most sources blame on iron and peat washed down from the bogs above. The best-known one, Ruskea Virta, means "brown stream" in Finnish.

03A playground for ice climbers

The same falls are among the best-known ice climbing spots in Finland. On a cold weekend you may see ropes and helmets on the bigger columns. Hiking tours stay on the trail and keep clear of the climbers below the falls.

What most hikers remember is the silence at the bottom of the gorge, broken only by the creak of ice settling on the cliff above.

04Light in the Lapland winter

Rovaniemi sits right on the Arctic Circle, and Korouoma a little south of it. In December the sun shows for only a few hours and hardly reaches the canyon floor. By February the days are longer and the ice glows in low sunshine. The best weeks to go.

05Fire sites and the rules of the reserve

Korouoma is a protected area cared for by Metsähallitus, the Finnish state body for nature reserves. The trail has lean-to shelters and fire sites that every visitor may use, and reviewers mention an outhouse at the car park and another near the fire. Light fires only at those sites and take your rubbish home.

06Manners on the trail

Keep to the marked path and hold the ropes on the steep parts. Never break off icicles or climb onto the falls. Siberian jays often turn up at the fire and will take food from your hand, but feed them only bread, never the sausage skins. Korouoma with kids has more on keeping young hikers safe.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about the Korouoma frozen waterfalls

Fourteen questions we hear again and again, with the full answer.

How much does a Korouoma frozen waterfalls tour cost?

The four tours on this page start at ~$89 per person with Arctic GM. ToTheNorth costs ~$146, while the small-group tours of Wild about Lapland and Beyond Arctic cost ~$163 or ~$163. Sale prices are often lower. Every price and extra is in our cost guide.

Which Korouoma tour is the best?

Arctic GM's hike and BBQ suits most visitors. It costs far less than the rest and still lends overalls, with the best score of the four. Wild about Lapland suits travelers without winter boots, and Beyond Arctic suits anyone who wants photos of themselves at the ice.

When are the Korouoma waterfalls frozen?

Usually from about December to April, with the thickest ice from January to March. It depends on the winter: a mild spell can soften the falls, and by late March some years are already wet. The season in detail.

How far is Korouoma from Rovaniemi?

About 105 km (65 miles) southeast, in the municipality of Posio. The tours drive about an hour and a half each way, so a full day lasts six to seven hours from pickup.

How hard is the hike to the frozen waterfalls?

Moderate. It is about 5 km there and back, with icy steps on the way down and a steep climb at the end. Ropes help on the steepest parts and every tour lends grips or spikes. The trail step by step.

Do I need my own winter clothing?

It depends on the tour. Wild about Lapland and Beyond Arctic lend winter clothing and boots, and Arctic GM lends thermal overalls. ToTheNorth lends only snow grips, so you need everything else yourself. What to wear.

How cold is it at Korouoma in winter?

Daytime highs in January and February are often around −8 to −10 °C (14 to 18 °F), and cold snaps go to −20 °C (−4 °F) or lower. One reviewer hiked in −30 °C. You warm up on the climbs and cool quickly at the falls.

Is the ice at Korouoma guaranteed?

No. The falls freeze with the cold and melt in a thaw, and no listing promises a certain size or color. In midwinter they are almost always there; at the edges of the season, check recent reviews before you book.

Can children do the Korouoma hike?

Active children can. Arctic GM and Beyond Arctic set the minimum age at 8, and one family on the Wild about Lapland tour brought two children of nine who coped fine. The cold and the final climb matter more than the distance. Korouoma with kids.

Is food included on the tours?

A campfire snack is, on all four: grilled sausages and hot drinks on Arctic GM and ToTheNorth, a campfire snack on Wild about Lapland and a light lunch on Beyond Arctic. Several reviewers wished for more, so bring your own snack and water.

Should I pick a small group?

If you can. The trail is narrow and icy, and in a group of eight everyone fits round one fire and one viewpoint. Arctic GM offers a group of eight as an option, which is the cheapest way to get one. Groups compared.

Can I visit Korouoma without a tour?

Yes, the trails are open to everyone. You need a car for the 1.5-hour drive plus spikes for your boots, and the confidence to handle icy descents alone in short daylight. Tour or drive yourself weighs it up.

Can I see the northern lights on the same day?

Yes, if the sky is clear. The tours drop you back in Rovaniemi by late afternoon, which leaves the evening for an aurora tour, though it makes for a long and cold day. Planning both.

Can I cancel a Korouoma tour for free?

Yes. All four can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before on GetYourGuide, and you can reserve now and pay later. If the operator cancels, for example because of extreme cold, you get your money back.
